Iron in front of glass can look quite elegant. As you can see in the picture, although not painted yet, you can imagine how it would look in your front door. This is a Iron Door Insert that we at Patina custom made to fit a front door that was fabricated from scratch. It was designed from an inspirational photo that the homeowner provided. The custom iron door insert was made with 1/2″ square bar and custom handmade scrolls. Also, it opens so that the homeowner can clean the glass on the outside when outside elements get involved. Most of the time covered porches extend around 10′ from your home. The reason is because of wind loads and wood can only handle so much wind. Structural steel beams can replace those wood beams and allow you to extend your porch even further out from your house.

The more covered porch you have the more of a uplift you have to allow for when the next storm or hurricane comes thru. This is where a steel beams can come in handy and give you that large open covered porch. We at Patina Metals Inc. installed and fabricated these beams at a West University home in Houston to make it possible for the homeowner to have a covered porch all the way to the edge of the swimming pool.

Steel Canopy Houston

Here is one of our recent wrought iron canopies in Houston, that is placed in a unique location in front of the residence. Although not shown in the pictures, there will be a wrought gate and stone pony wall with iron panels on top at this entry. This design will provide a sense of privacy while still allowing a view of the street. Also, the respectable landscape company that we build this for, will be adding a copper roof system that will provide nice contemporary modern look.  

Wrought Iron canopy’s can be designed out of many different material sizes this particular canopy has a heavier look to it. It was made with 5×5 columns and a 5×3 roof frame.

Custom designed metal edging is a great way to make your landscaping really stand out. When you design it you have a multitude of options verses the standard 3″ metal edge or plastic. Corten planter boxes are the new style being use in the Houston area. What corten metal does is rust to a point and then stops. It is being use by many Houston landscapers.

This is an example of metal edging being use to design a deck garden on the third floor of a condo in Houston. This edging is attached to the floating stone floor with 1/4″ stainless steel anchor bolts. It creates a nice steel finish to the garden.

Two leaf wrought iron metal gates in Houston are becoming a very useful and decorative trend. Do you need to get large equipment into your yard or want to be able to move furniture into your home? We can fabricate a double leaf walk gate for you with one side that is set with a lockable pin. This way it only functions when you need it!

Here is an example of a decorative double door walk gate.

This next example has a support brace across the top of the gates.

The reason for this is because the soil in south Texas is soft and moves the posts around over time. With this design it serves as a way to preserve the functionality of the gates. However, some homeowners do not care for the look of the brace across the top.

Wrought Iron Driveway gates that are sure to keep your property secure!

Some clients of ours want a elegant look with a superior strength to deter people from attempting to get on their property.  Do you not want the operators to be visible? These operators are hidden inside the stone columns and the driveway gate itself is constructed with solid bar and custom designed pickets. Notice how beautifully it was designed to line up perfectly with the pitch of the roof. Also, dead centered on the front door which is at least 70 feet away if not more.

  To your right you can see some of the amazing landscaping the client added to spruce up the main focal point, which is this gate next to the house of course.

This particular heavy duty driveway

gate is a two leaf driveway gate so it requires two operators that opens them simultaneously in opposite directions. With this design you will literally feel like your home is a palace. 

A single leaf driveway gate with the same concept in solid bar stock can also provide you with the same effect if your looking for he same strength with an open feel.

This is a simple wrought iron walk gate designed to meet pool code. It is has a self closing spring to make sure the neighbor kids don’t end up in your pool when you are not aware.

This trellis was designed by one of our clients architects and engineered to with stand extreme wind loads. This is just one of many trellis systems that Patina Metals has fabricated and installed in the Houston area. This particular trellis is made with various sizes of rectangular tubing. It also was hot dipped galvanized to prevent nature from eating away at it.

Extending a Spiral Stair platform and moving it to avoid obstructing the view from the window!

Here is a spiral staircase that we moved 10′ 5″ from its original position. We did this so that the view of the pool could be seen clearly from the new window that our client had installed.

In order to accomplish this, we cut off the original platform. Then added a new structurally sound platform! Specified by the structural engineer that our client was working with.

There are very heavy structural beams embedded inside the wall to hold up such a massive structure. As you can see by the size of the man in the picture, this structure is huge and is cantilevered with decorative support brackets.

We were approached to create a unique interior stair railing for a prestigious oil magnate living in River Oaks, and we were tasked with creating an old world style European Rail reminiscent of 17th century in the Baroque style. The architect wished to incorporate both French and Italian architectural elements in the staircase which would communicate both Renaissance ornamentation and Baroque spatiality.  This would be a grand staircase indeed, and we set about the task bringing our craftsman’s extensive interior railing experience and our draftsmen’s skill set in bringing drawings and sketches to life in order to deliver a truly unique and magnificent stair railing for the client. 

Through a collaborative effort of the architect, the designer, our draftsmen, and craftsmen, we presented the samples to the client to great applause, and were awarded the grand staircase and interior stair railing you see below.

I. Welding finishes.  Patina Metals Standard Finish #1 as follows. Are you getting this level of finish for your jobs?

II. Malleable Iron

What about offering you better grades of malleable iron, instead of forcing the least expensive option on you, without giving you an option.

Fabrication finish options for  malleable iron direct from the foundry have an irregular rough textured surface overall that reveals casting lines, voids, and other imperfections.

Patina Metals offers three finish grades for our malleable iron products:
Foundry Grade (FG) – As received direct from the foundry. High level of surface texture variations and high level of variation from piece to piece. These are not recommended for most applications, but you may not have that choice if you go with just any metal fabricator.
Commercial Grade (CG) – Pieces from the foundry are selected for job uniformity and the largest variations are cleaned up. Cast lines are still evident.
Architectural Grade (AG) – Commercial grade malleable iron that is cleaned up to a higher degree and sandblasted to minimize the surface texture variations.
Because of the irregularities that will be evident with any of the finish grades, we recommend a painted finish for all malleable iron products.

III. Ferrous Metal Finishes

It is well known that most substances tend to revert to their natural form, and among the architectural metals, carbon steel and iron are the most conspicuous examples of this rule. All of the common metals oxidize, or corrode, to some extent, but while the oxides forming on other metals generally inhibit the progress of further corrosion, the oxide, or rust, that forms on ordinary carbon steel and iron does not act in this way. Instead, if not prevented, oxidation progresses until the metal reverts to essentially the same state in which it was found in nature.

It is generally the chief function of the finishes used on the common ferrous metals to counteract this tendency, to inhibit corrosion. Some of the high strength, low alloy, copper bearing structural steels have been used in exposed applications such as building structural elements, curtain walls, bridge structures and transmission towers without applying paint for surface protection. These steels are referred to in the industry as “weathering steels.” When exposed to the weather they develop a relatively tight, adherent oxide film that tends to protect the surface against further oxidation or rusting, with time the film darkens and takes on a color ranging from dark reddish brown to a warm purple black. These surfaces, however, are not fully resistant to the effects of rain and serious rust staining can occur where water runs down and off the building on materials such as concrete. While exposed surfaces have excellent durability, unexposed surfaces and interior surfaces do not develop sound oxide films and must be cleaned and painted with rust inhibiting primers in the same way that other carbon steels are protected. Today these steels are not often used for architectural applications. The term “finish,” when used in reference to iron and steel, usually has a somewhat different connotation than when used in reference to the nonferrous metals. On the other metals it generally implies a surface treatment by mechanical or chemical means, and less frequently refers to an applied coating of some kind. Below we have an example of a powder coating layer applied to a metal substrate.

With iron and steel the reverse is true- most of the common finishes used on these metals are applied as coatings. Mechanical and chemical processes are extensively used for cleaning and surface preparation, but rarely as true finishes. All types of additive coatings are used far more extensively on carbon steel than on other architectural metals, and for two basic reasons: 1) a protective covering is usually essential, as already explained, and 2) if an opaque coating is to be used on a metal it is only the coating itself which is seen, and for many applications costs can be minimized by using the most economical substrate having the necessary physical properties. The ferrous metals satisfy this requirement. It should be noted, however, that the durability of many organic coatings under exposure to the elements is influenced by the durability of the base metal itself. Deterioration of the coating may be initiated at the interface between the coating and the substrate, due to the penetration of the coating by corrodents, and the corrosion resistance of the base metal therefore becomes a critical factor.

Probably the most common finish for architectural steel and iron is paint, a form of organic coating, applied by brush, spray, flow coating or dipping and frequently air dried. Relatively inexpensive metallic coatings of zinc, aluminum or combinations of these two metals, are applied to many steel building products, serving either as a base for subsequent organic coatings or as a final finish. Vitreous coatings in the form of porcelain enamel and plastic films as laminated coatings are also used. With the exception of some hardware items, metallic coatings are not used on architectural products made of aluminum, copper alloys or stainless steel. On the other hand they are commonly applied to carbon steel and iron. For this reason metallic coatings are discussed in this section.  We will go more in depth on finishes for Ferrous and Non-ferrous metals next blog.

When it comes to your creation, why trust anyone with less experience or less of a commitment to excellence? Brass and Bronze are metal alloys used extensively in everyday objects. While brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, bronze is an alloy consisting mainly of copper, combined most often with tin, but at times also with other metals.

Properties

Brass has higher malleability than zinc or copper. It has a a low melting point (900 centigrade) and flows when melted making it easy to cast in molds. Combinations of iron, aluminum, silicon and manganese make brass wear and tear and corrosion resistant. Susceptible to stress cracking when exposed to ammonia.

History

The first known existence of bronze dates to about 3500 BC and the Sumerians and lends its name to the Bronze age. The discovery of bronze enabled people to create better metal objects than before. Tools, weapons, armor, and various building materials, like decorative tiles, made of bronze were harder and more durable than their stone and copper.

Brass came later dates back to about 500 BC. Zinc is practically never found naturally in its pure state, but people had realized that copper smelted with calamine — a zinc ore — produced a golden-colored tarnish-resistant metal that was useful for all sorts of things due in part to its low melting point and malleability. The zinc itself is not seen but is released from the calamine ore by heating and combines immediately with copper.

For those wishing to know a little more about the technical aspects, we use a 30 % argon gas mix, but when welding thicker material we use helium and a higher amperage as was the case for this gate.

We also used a brazing alloy filler to keep temperature down on base metal (brass) to keep porosity of base metal down. You can use a variety of alloys, but we prefer silicone bronze because it helps to keep the temperature and fuming down when reacting with the zinc as brass has some zinc in it  and will smoke and fume. It is important that the melting temp of brass is not reached (stay below 900 c) since the metallurgical and mechanical strength of the brass at an atomic level will become compromised, as the solid brass goes to a plasma/ liquid flux and then back to solid again. This is critical from a thermodynamic point of view, especially when you are talking about a hinge point for the gate. Of what use is a hinge for a heavy gate if the underlying material is going to give way at the weld interface in a few decades instead of lasting for centuries? Besides, whatever “Patina” would develop over those decades would have to be removed in order to repair and correct that failure point.  This negates the very premise of using such an expensive medium as brass, which is made to last a lifetime, instead of steel.

The orange-tinged colored panels are ballistic material that wraps embassies around the world with Mil Spec levels J-1 through 4 level protection. This particular material and room are engineered to withstand f-5 tornados and were incorporated as a bathroom to this detached art studio. The 25′ wide by 14′ wall of windows incorporate large panel low E cubed 366 tempered glass, with the latest coatings for energy efficiency, wereas thick-walled, structural 2″ by 3″ vertical and horizontal steel members were used to insure the structural integrity of the building.
